Chromium is an essential trace element needed in minute amounts to form an organic complex known as the Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF). This interacts with the pancreatic hormone, insulin, to regulate the uptake of glucose by cells. GTF encourages the production of energy from glucose, especially in muscles, and may also suppress hunger pangs through a direct effect on the satiety centre in the brain.
Most refined carbohydrates have little chromium content and people eating processed foods will have low intakes. In general, the more carbohydrate you eat, the more chromium you need. Food sources of chromium include whole grains, cereals, spices (black pepper, thyme), mushrooms, brown sugar, coffee, tea, beer, wine, and meat products. Brewer's yeast is also a good source of chromium.
Because chromium has an effect on appetite, hunger pangs and fat metabolism, it has been used as a slimming aid. When combined with a sensible diet and regular exercise, chromium supplements may help some people lose weight (especially if they are deficient in chromium).
It may help reduce sugar cravings and regulate appetite by stabilizing blood sugar levels. It won't help you lose weight by itself, but if you take it along with changing your diet and adding exercise, it may be helpful. Coenzyme Q10 levels were significantly lower in depressed patients and patients with chronic fatigue syndrome than in normal controls. Researchers conclude that since statins are known to deplete CoQ10 levels, supplementation should be considered for cardiovascular disease patients taking statins that exhibit depression or fatigue.

| Testosterone Replacement
New Clinical Trial Underway
There is a new clinical trial underway regarding testosterone therapy for hypogonadal men. Hypogonadism (low Testosterone) is on the rise and may be linked to higher death rates from all causes. This study is unprecedented in order to determine if testosterone therapy can improve some afflictions of old age. This is great news for The Institute since we have been offering hormone optimization for years!
After the age of 30, hormones drop 1%-35 each year, which means a 20% drop by age 50 and a 50% drop by age 80. With the recognized decline of hormones from 30 onward, maintaining hormonal balance is critical since each hormone has a specific job and overlaps with others to create a synergictic environment for good health.
