Minimize Your Stretch Marks
Skin, if stretched by rapid growth, may not bounce back. Instead, it develops linear colored scars commonly referred to as stretch marks. Stretch marks often start off as reddish or purplish in color and then with time become glossy skin with streaks of silver or white.
Stretch marks occur in the dermis, the elastic middle layer of skin that allows it to retain its shape. However, when constantly stretched, the dermis can break down leaving behind stretch marks. Men and women can get stretch marks on several areas of their bodies, including the abdominal area, thighs, hips, breasts, upper arms, or lower back. Stretch marks develop in a variety of circumstances, including:
- Pregnancy.
- Weight gain
- Weightlifters can develop stretch marks due to rapid growth of muscles
- Adolescents may notice stretch marks during growth spurts.
- Medication use. Corticosteroid creams, lotions and pills and chronic steroid use can cause stretch marks.
- Conditions or diseases. Cushing's syndrome and adrenal gland diseases can cause widespread stretch marks as can Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and other hereditary (genetic) disorders.
At The Institute, we have found a treatment protocol to use to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. By combining the Accent laser to tighten the skin and the Pixel Resurfacing Laser to lighten the hyperpigmentation and strengthen the skin, this combination can greatly reduce the appearance of stretch marks. To see if you are a candidate for these treatments, please call our office to schedule your appointment.

Get your beach BOD ready with our Body Sculpting Laser
As the summer approaches and clothes become more revealing, we all notice the pudges and jiggles a little bit more. There are many areas such as the love handles, lower abs, buttocks and saddle bags that do not respond to exercise and diet like we hope.
The Accent Laser, is the only FDA approved laser to help with body sculpting and cellulite. Since
Dr Patel is one of the physician experts for The Accent Laser, we want to be the first to tell you that these lasers have been found to be very effective to sculpt those hard areas and reduce cellulite with what is called circumferential treatments.
Instead of treating just the area that concerns you, the best results come from treating the full area-front and back. The reason is, if we reduce the size of the fat cell in the treated area, fat will migrate from other side to redeposit in that same area, resulting in minimal change. However, when the entire area is treated, this migration does not occur. Patients must follow a good nutrition plan and exercise to have optimal results. So, now when you treat your abs, we recommend treating the back area, love handles, and full abs. The treatment will deliver large amounts of energy to that area to decrease the size of the fat cell followed by concentrated energy to your toughest region for more effective results!

Vitamin C and Sun Protection
Topical Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which means it is able to neutralize free radicals. One of the current theories behind sun damage is that UVA and UVB ultra-violet light interacts with the skin, producing a high energy reaction at the molecular level. This energy produces cells that are unstable, called free radicals, which can destroy critical function and structure of the skin over time. This results is uneven complextion, sun spots, and wrinkles. Other causes of free radicals are cigarette smoke, pollution, pesticides, herbicides, and excessive heat and cold.
Vitamin C's use for anti-aging centers on its ability to stimulate collagen production, reduce inflammation, and neutralize free radical reactions. Studies support that topical Vitamin C can increase collagen production. Collagen is the major building block, or scaffolding, of the skin. This stimulation helps reduce fine wrinkles and gives the skin a smoother, more even appearing complexion.
After application, topical Vitamin C is readily absorbed and cannot be washed off by water or perspiration. Vitamin C, combined with UVA/UVB sunscreen or sunblock, gives superior sun protection that is better than either preparation alone.
At The Institute, the staff's favorite Vitamin C product is Obagi's Vitamin C Serum. It is available to patients in different strengths and with or without hydroquinone. Optimize your skin protection today! |
Are You Getting the Right Vitamins?
You can be deficient in micronutrients and not even know it. Studies have shown that 50% of patients taking a multivitamin are functionally deficient in one or more essential nutrients that are vital to long term health. Scientific evidence also confirms such deficiencies are associated with disease processes and the overall condition of your health. Deficiencies suppress the function of the immune system and contribute to degenerative processes. So, anyone who is interested in feeling his or her best can benefit from these tests.
Nutrient status is a vital foundation of health. Each micronutrient plays an indispensable role in promoting optimal cell function. When some cells do not function at their best, the foundation of our health is compromised, setting the stage for the development of disease. Identifying and correcting nutritional deficiencies is an important step in the long-term maintenance of optimal health.
Vitamin deficiencies aren't just a reflection of diet. Since we are all biochemically unique, nutrient deficiencies will vary from patient to patient, and do not necessarily correlate directly with nutrient intake, even among those with similar health conditions. Many factors beyond diet determine whether nutrient function is adequate. These include biochemical individuality, genetic predisposition, absorption and metabolism, age, disease conditions and medications.
Certain diseases or conditions are linked to nutrient imbalances. This includes: skin conditions, arthritis, Parkinson's, alcoholism/substance abuse, behavioral disorders, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic fatigue, macular degeneration, diabetes, immune disorders, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and osteoporosis have been linked to nutrient imbalances. Studies published in 2002 in the Journal of the American Medical Association confirm the connection between nutrient deficiencies and disease processes.
If you are interested in having this test done, please call our office at 610.642.2644. We are offered the first tests on Wed. June 3rd in Ardmore. The next available dates are June 23rd 11am-1pm in Rittenhouse and July 16th 8:30-10:30 in Ardmore. The cost of the lab work is $110 using any type of insurance. The cost of the follow up visit depends on the type of insurance you have. For more information, visit the Spectracell website by clicking on the link below.
