Newest Diagnostic Test for Diabetes
In the past, physicians have relied on a fasting glucose test and oral glucose tolerance tests as the standard in diagnosing diabetes. Last weekend, The American Diabetes Association recommended a switch to the hemablobin A1C as the standard test. In the past, this test has been used to monitor if diabetes treatments are working.
The reason that this test would be beneficial in diagnosing this disease is that it measures average blood glucose over the 2-3 preceding months and it is more convenient for patients since it is not a fasting blood test. Also, A1C values vary less than fasting glucose tests. It gives a better integrated view of average blood sugar.
Dr. Patel has been testing Hemablobin A1C in all of her wellness patients for 4 years. She has always believed that this test gives a unique understanding of cumulative things happening in the body. By using this test, she has been able to help patients treat metabolic syndrome and prevent diabetes from developing. If you are intersted in having this test done, please call our office. Are You Getting the Right Vitamins?
You can be deficient in micronutrients and not even know it. Studies have shown that 50% of patients taking a multivitamin are functionally deficient in one or more essential nutrients that are vital to long term health. Scientific evidence also confirms such deficiencies are associated with disease processes and the overall condition of your health. Deficiencies suppress the function of the immune system and contribute to degenerative processes. So, anyone who is interested in feeling his or her best can benefit from these tests.
Nutrient status is a vital foundation of health. Each micronutrient plays an indispensable role in promoting optimal cell function. When some cells do not function at their best, the foundation of our health is compromised, setting the stage for the development of disease. Identifying and correcting nutritional deficiencies is an important step in the long-term maintenance of optimal health.
Vitamin deficiencies aren't just a reflection of diet. Since we are all biochemically unique, nutrient deficiencies will vary from patient to patient, and do not necessarily correlate directly with nutrient intake, even among those with similar health conditions. Many factors beyond diet determine whether nutrient function is adequate. These include biochemical individuality, genetic predisposition, absorption and metabolism, age, disease conditions and medications.
Certain diseases or conditions are linked to nutrient imbalances. This includes:skin conditions, arthritis, Parkinson's, alcoholism/substance abuse, behavioral disorders, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic fatigue, macular degeneration, diabetes, immune disorders, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and osteoporosis have been linked to nutrient imbalances. Studies published in 2002 in the Journal of the American Medical Association confirm the connection between nutrient deficiencies and disease processes.
If you are interested in having this test done, please call our office at 610.642.2644. The next available dates are June 23rd 11am-1pm in Rittenhouse and July 16th 8:30am-10:30am in Ardmore. The Institute's Approach to Treating Acne
At The Institute, we treat inner health as well as outer beauty. The two go hand-in- hand. A common skin condition that we treat is acne. Acne not only affects teenagers. More and more, we are seeing adults with acne and scarring from acne. If you do not look your best, you will not feel your best. It a vicious cycle that we can help to end.
There are many myths about how you can get acne. But the truth is that what is going on inside the body is reflected on the outside. What we eat, how we manage stress, environmental conditions, and hormones all have an affect on acne. Dr. Patel has a holistic approach to treating this skin condition. After your skincare consultation, she has a better understanding of your circumstances and can better direct you for treatment.
Depending on your symptoms, Dr. Patel may recommend micronutrient testing to see if you are deficient in vitamins or minerals. She may recommend hormonal testing to see if you have an imbalance. She may also recommend meditation to help calm stress and reduce the inflammation causing acne. She usually recommends supplements such as Omega 3s, Vitamin A, and Vitamin D. Also, the proper skincare products and treatments are also discussed.
Dr. Patel is doing her next teleseminar on acne. If you would like to join her, the information is listed below. If you would like to make an appointment for a consultation, please call 610.642.2644.
